“Launching unassisted Tap On in the Whitsundays has been a huge step forward for Whitsunday Transit. The rollout has been smooth and efficient, delivering seamless, offline-ready payments that remove friction from daily operations. It’s made boarding faster and easier for our team, while giving visitors an effortless way to travel—exactly what you’d expect in a destination where getting around should feel easy.”
Unassisted ticketing
Travellers can simply tap-on the bus with their contactless payment card or digital wallet to pay for travel. The traveller’s fare is calculated based on their actual usage of all bus services throughout a given day and is automatically charged to their payment account at the end of the day.
The solution is live across all of Whitsunday Transit’s scheduled bus routes, enhancing community connectivity and offering a better travel experience for locals and tourists alike in a region that attracts over one million visitors annually.

Multi-traveller
The Whitsundays hosts approximately one million visitors annually, with many arriving in groups such as families, tours etc. This creates a unique demand for group-friendly transport experiences that don’t cause queues. With our multi-traveller option, travellers can simply select ‘Additional travellers?’, enter the number of additional travellers, and tap once to pay for the entire group.

Offline Coverage:
Whitsunday Transit services span remote areas with limited connectivity. Traditionally, as card payments rely on cellular coverage, operators risk losing revenue, and travellers face frustration when devices go offline and are unable to pay with their preferred payment method.

Connect Greater Whitsunday study, 2024
With tikpay, payments are processed even without cellular coverage, as transactions are deferred. This protects revenue by enabling fare collection even when coverage drops and ensures travellers can use their contactless payment card or digital wallet to pay for their ticket.
High early adoption:
Within the first three months of launch, we achieved over ten thousand contactless ticket purchases per month. This strong uptake demonstrates the demand for simpler payment options and highlights a shift in behaviour amongst travellers.

Whitsunday Transit demonstrates how a regional operator can deliver a modern ticketing experience that is quick to implement, cost-effective, and seamless for travellers.
