Tap -on / Tap-off ticketing

Travellers can simply tap-on / tap-off the bus with their contactless payment card or digital wallet to pay for travel. The traveller’s fare is calculated based on their actual usage of all bus services throughout a given day and is automatically charged to their payment account at the end of the day.

Driver-assisted ticketing

Travellers can board the bus by purchasing a ticket from the driver using their contactless payment card (Visa / Mastercard) or digital wallet (Google Wallet / Apple Pay / Samsung Pay).

The solution is live across all of Kinetic’s scheduled bus routes on Magnetic Island, enhancing community connectivity and offering a better travel experience for locals and tourists alike.

Multi-traveller

Each year, North Queensland hosts approximately 1.3 million visitors, with many arriving in groups such as families, tours and with friends. This creates a unique demand for group-friendly transport experiences, which doesn’t cause queues on buses. Instead of buying a group ticket from the driver, with our multi-traveller option, travellers can simply select ‘Additional travellers?’, enter the number of additional travellers and tap once to pay for the entire group.

Faster boarding:

Boarding efficiency has significantly improved. At busy ferry terminals and bus stops, this approach has reduced dwell time and helps to prevent bottlenecks, enabling faster, more consistent traveller flow without relying on additional staff.  Speed to board is extremely important in an island that relies on scheduled services and can move high volumes of travellers, especially during peak tourist seasons.

High early adoption:

Within the first month of launch, 87% of travellers utilising Kinetic's Magnetic Island services use tap on / off. This strong uptake demonstrates the demand for simpler payment options and highlights a shift in behaviour amongst travellers.
